The Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) workshop is for caregivers who want to feel more comfortable, confident and competent in helping to prevent the immediate risk of suicide. Over a million caregivers have received this training. Just as "CPR" skills make physical first aid possible, training in suicide intervention develops the skills needed for life assisting suicide first aid. ASIST is a two-day intensive, interactive and practice-dominated course designed to help caregivers learn how to intervene to prevent the immediate risk of suicide and provide safety-for-now.
The workshop is designed for all caregivers (any person over age 15 in a position of trust). This includes professionals, paraprofessionals and lay people. It is suitable for mental health professionals, nurses, physicians, pharmacists, teachers, counselors, youth workers, police and correctional staff, school support staff, clergy, and community volunteers. In ASIST, sophisticated helping concepts are translated into generic language so that different types of caregivers can learn together. ASIST is the most widely used suicide intervention training program in the world. Additional information is available online at http://www.livingworks.net.

This interactive and educational workshop will explore the importance of ethical conduct and professional boundaries in social work practice. Social workers often face challenging dynamics in therapeutic relationships, including emotional involvement, transference, countertransference, dual relationships, and confidentiality dilemmas. This training will provide attendees with tools to navigate these challenges effectively through ethical decision-making models, real-life case studies, and guided self-reflection. Attendees will examine key NASW Code of Ethics standards, explore the implications of over- and under-involvement, and learn strategies to maintain balance, prevent burnout, and safeguard client well-being. A special focus will be placed on culturally responsive practice, ethical gray areas, and protecting both provider and client from harm. This training supports social workers in strengthening professional judgment and promoting client-centered, ethical care.

A Culture of belonging is the foundation of healthy and integrated educational services and

Implicit bias is “an attitude or internalized stereotype that affects an individual’s perception,
action, or decision making in an unconscious manner and often contributes to unequal
treatment of people based on race, ethnicity, nationality, gender, gender identity, sexual
orientation, religion, socioeconomic status, age, disability, or other characteristic” (Michigan
Public Health Code).
This interactive workshop will help us look below the surface to understand how the stories we
have about ourselves, our communities, and our students or clients came to be; how they
influence our actions and inaction; and how we can hone our own awareness of our conscious
and unconscious motivations to provide services that will result in more equitable outcomes.
Regardless of the demographics of your students or clients, understanding the core values
aligned with DEI and the potential impact of implicit bias can improve outcomes for everyone
you serve.
Note: This training will provide 3 hours of training to satisfy the Michigan department of
Licensing and Regulatory Affairs requirement for implicit bias training. Participants seeking to
meet the requirements of licensure should review the specific time requirements for their

Ancient and indigenous cultures understood how to use physical movement, sound resonance and vibrational energies to prevent illness, address physical pain, and stimulate healing in the body. Research indicates burgeoning rates of autoimmune and inflammatory conditions, such as diabetes (type 1), celiac disease, Crohn’s disease, tendonitis, rheumatoid arthritis, and others. As rates and types of chronic illnesses increase, interest in natural wellness practices to manage health and overall wellbeing are expanding. During this session participants will: 1) increase awareness about the influence of implicit bias on indigenous wellness practices; 2) learn how to cultivate Qi (energy) to strengthen the body and reduce the potential for illness/disease; 3) learn how vibrational energy and sound resonance can be used to dissolve emotional and physical blockages in the body that could potentially lead to dis-ease states, inflammation, and physical pain; 4) learn how tapping on the body’s meridians can reduce anxiety and release excess stress; and 5) learn about flourishing opportunities that exist for social workers in the soon-to-be billion-dollar wellness industry.

Professional ethics provide guidelines for safe and effective treatment delivery, yet we are often challenged in our day-to-day delivery of services. And for those of us who work with people with the co-occurring diagnosis of Substance-Use-Disorder and Mental Health, these challenges are ongoing. This workshop will provide an opportunity to explore our own personal and professional values within the context of the NASW Code of Ethics and MCBAP Counselor's Code of Ethical Standards. HIPAA provides legal protections safeguarding client confidentiality, yet clients seeking treatment for SUD are further protected under 42 CFR Part 2; understanding these protections (including recent changes) are crucial in providing good care. Participants are encouraged to bring their real-life examples of ethical dilemmas to enhance our learning in how to use ethical decision-making models.

Psychedelics, including the plant medicines, Ayahuasca and Psilocybin have been experiencing a renaissance in the media as burgeoning research indicate the efficacy of these substances with treatment resistant depression, anxiety, PTSD, and other mental health conditions. Along with the increasing popularity of psychedelics is ancient energy healing practices to treat emotional, psychological, and physical pain. Integrative Social Work (ISW), a developing area of practice includes research on psychedelics as a treatment modality, the influence of Wi-Fi and EMFs on human consciousness, and Eastern cultural healing practices. Healing practices including emotional freedom techniques (tapping), acupressure, acupuncture, sound bathing, and others provide a foundation for ISW practices. Integrative Social Work is quickly expanding to include research on psychedelics, as some cities and states have decriminalized the use of psychedelics, including Ann Arbor, MI. This workshop will include three CE Clock Hours in ethics and will explore a variety of ethical considerations, including professional competence when working in an evolving area, the importance of cultural competency when providing services that integrate ancient and indigenous spiritual and cultural practices, appropriately acknowledging and giving credit to avoid risks associated with cultural appropriation, promoting client self-determination and more.

We have all heard over and over about the importance of self-care. It is now even part of our Code of Ethics’ most recent revision. Pain management is a crucial aspect of self-care. Both improved self-care, and pain management, will likely enhance our ability to care for ourselves and our Clients. What we also need to do is improve our understanding and acceptance of self-care as being more than just telling ourselves we need to have a better work/life balance. We need to determine and operationalize a personal self-care/pain management plan.

In today's fast-paced world, many people experience challenges with focus and attention. Youth are disproportionately affected due to the changes in our society and the daily technology that has been available for the duration of their young lives. The ability to be fully present in both professional and personal interactions is essential for healthy relationships and success in school and work. This training delves into the latest research on environmental and societal changes contributing to increased 'brain fog' and diminished focus. While topics like smartphones, screens, and social media will be covered, the training also goes deeper, examining factors such as pollution, diet, sleep, and more. This training will work to further educate child welfare workers about these challenges and also discuss solutions. This knowledge is a stepping stone for workers to better equip caregivers of youth, and youth themselves, to live less distracted.
