Executive Function: It Affects All Ages, and Not Just in School

Course Description:

One would assume that executive function is a conversation only about students in the school setting, but clinicians are being asked to support their clients of any age, including adults with ADHD qualities (and thus challenges with executive function). These skills are essential, yet for a myriad of reasons they are not always easily accessible for our clients. This presentation will help clinicians (and educators) to better understand executive function’s challenges, and to learn strategies to help their clients to succeed.

Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST)

Course Description:

The Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) workshop is for caregivers who want to feel more comfortable, confident and competent in helping to prevent the immediate risk of suicide. Over a million caregivers have received this training. Just as "CPR" skills make physical first aid possible, training in suicide intervention develops the skills needed for life assisting suicide first aid. ASIST is a two-day intensive, interactive and practice-dominated course designed to help caregivers learn how to intervene to prevent the immediate risk of suicide and provide safety-for-now.

The workshop is designed for all caregivers (any person over age 15 in a position of trust). This includes professionals, paraprofessionals and lay people. It is suitable for mental health professionals, nurses, physicians, pharmacists, teachers, counselors, youth workers, police and correctional staff, school support staff, clergy, and community volunteers. In ASIST, sophisticated helping concepts are translated into generic language so that different types of caregivers can learn together. ASIST is the most widely used suicide intervention training program in the world. Additional information is available online at http://www.livingworks.net.

What if the patient-therapist relationship were (a bit) like infant-mother interactions?

Course Description:

The processes driving development of a child, primarily those embedded in the parent-child relationship, are the most striking form of human change. Therapy too works to change the functioning of individuals. In this presentation, Dr. Tronick will suggest that the parent-child relaionship qualities that promote change and growth can aid our understanding of the patient-therapist relationship. While the differences between therapy and parent-child relationships are recognized, the basic characteristics of the parent-child relationship, when applied to the therapeutic relationship, may enhance therapeutic change. Using videos from his research on the Still-Face and parent-child interactions, Dr. Tronick will illustrate the necessity of dyadic organization; the fundamental, messy process of meaning making; and the essential function of reparation.

Understanding Sexual Orientation & Gender Identity (SOGI): What Your Clients Wish You Understood During Treatment

Course Description:

Just as the terms and concepts for each of the newer generations before us evolves and changes, so have the terms and concepts within the LGBTQI+ community. Our clients, young or “young at heart,” face more scrutiny to “identify their authentic selves,” most without the appropriate understanding and support they truly deserve from the professional encouraging them to do so. Today, Social Workers and other Healthcare Providers need a foundational understanding of SOGI (sexual orientation and gender identity) in addition to a foundational understanding of the harm done when using outdated, unintentional homophobic or transphobic language. This presentation will offer a safe place to learn basic terms and concepts important to this community, offer an opportunity to learn new and emerging, lesser-known terms and concepts, while offering ample opportunity for questions. This presentation will also offer case studies and opportunities to discuss your own questions and experiences from your current caseloads.

The Power of Resiliency to Heal Trauma, Build Mental Health, and Restore Functioning

Course Description:

. Resiliency research reveals three primary factors in building resiliency to overcome adversity and stress. Most important is the development of relational connection that communicates that one is loved, valued, wanted and cared for. Such connections mitigate isolation and self deprecation that often lead to depression. Second, is mastery/efficacy that provides experiences of success that enhance esteem and build motivation decreasing the risk of mental health disorders. Third, is the ability to regulate affect which increases executive functioning that is essential in rewiring the brain.

Introduction to Deconstructing Anxiety

Course Description:

“Deconstructing Anxiety” is a new approach for rapidly uncovering the root causes of anxiety. It introduces powerful techniques for releasing the resistances that keep anxiety alive, getting at their source and transforming them into a sense of high purpose and meaning. There is a “core fear” at the root of all anxiety, expressing itself in five major universal themes of loss: (1) abandonment (loss of love) (2) loss of identity (3) loss of meaning (4) loss of purpose (5) fear of death. We develop our primary defenses as our best attempt to protect ourselves from these fears, but always at too great a cost. This leaves us constantly holding vigil, on the lookout for the resurfacing of the threat. We build our entire personality upon this fear-defense dynamic. When it gets out of control, an anxiety disorder develops. The theory and techniques discussed in this webinar will teach you how to uncover the core fear and chief defense quickly and reliably.

Introduction to Non-Violent Communication

Course Description:

Conflict is a healthy and inevitable part of personal and professional relationships. Conflict often arises because of breakdowns in communication, expectations (both spoken and unspoken), and trust. While many might prefer avoiding conflict altogether, it only manages to “pop-up” in unexpected ways at later times. Left unaddressed, it can have a negative and lasting impact on both relationships and outcomes. This is especially true when having difficult conversations around race and power. Non-Violent Communication (NVC)uses a four-part guide as part of its conflict resolution philosophy that is used to address conflict in a productive and transparent way. This webinar will introduce you to the model of Non-Violent Communication, review the four-part process, and identify opportunities to practice its application as a method for conflict resolution.

Advancing Case Management’s Health Equity Pillars for Serious Illness (HEP-SI)

Course Description:

Health equity is an integral factor of any quality healthcare equation. This theme is equally powerful in the end-of-life, or serious illness space. Timely palliative and hospice referrals are delayed by ongoing misconceptions of their intent by patients and practitioners. Cultural competence impacts ethical conversations by case managers about patient autonomy, prognosis, and quality of life. Implicit biases impede effective pain management across ethnicity, gender, and race, among other groups. Further barriers to care access for minoritized and marginalized populations are amplified by their lack of access to clinical trials, which adds another obstacle to advancing appropriate care. ‘Patient-centric care’ is no longer enough. Every patient and family should feel safe, seen, heard, and valued, and through every touchpoint of care. Yet, achieving this reality is case management’s latest challenge.

Evolve your practice approach from “Patient-centric” to “Patient-inclusive”. Learn how Case Management’s Health Equity Pillars for Serious Illness (HEP-SI) empower the workforce to maintain their ethical balance amid the ongoing health equity evolution.
