Course Description:
Did you know that 1 in 8 students in Michigan high school students identifies as lesbian, gay, bisexual, and/or transgender (LGBT) and they are at greater risk for homelessness, substance use, harassment, suicide, as well as school failure and dropout? The good news is there are simple, impactful steps schools can take to mitigate these risk factors. In this series, participants will gain a foundational understanding LGBTQ+ students and their experiences in schools; explore implicit biases and the impact for LGBTQ+ students; discuss relevant laws to support students and families, and avoid lawsuits; and identify best practice strategies so students feel safe, supported, and included so they can thrive in school.
Objectives
• Discuss key laws and court cases pertaining to LGBTQ+ students, their families and school employees
• State the implications of key legal and policy issues affecting LGBTQ+ students and a safe school environment
• Identify next steps in supporting LGBTQ+ students, their families and school employees within the scope of federal and state laws and local policies
