Course Description:
Individuals with disabilities and special needs sometimes struggle to reach their financial, healthcare, and educational goals. Social workers are in a unique position to direct families to common special needs planning tools that can help with short/long-term goal setting and outcomes. This CE covers the essential laws and policies on disability asset management (without the loss of government benefits eligibility), special education plans, and healthcare related support systems.
Individuals with life-long disabilities are often marginalized in society. This population faces unique barriers and challenges to future planning for financial, healthcare, and special education needs across their lifespans. Individuals with disabilities are for more likely than the general population to experience hurdles to short and long-term future planning. These include, but are not limited to: struggles with financial solvency, paying out-of-pocket costs for disability-related expenses, and receiving education services that are not tailored to address specific needs.
Social workers play an integral role in supporting individuals with disabilities as well as their caregivers. As such, social workers are uniquely suited to provide appropriate services and supports for people with disabilities and their caregivers. This CE is relevant to supporting social work professional development as it pertains to the best practices for assisting this vulnerable population in future planning matters.
