Course Description:
Diet and nutrition play a key role in morbidity and mortality. The potential for better nutritional habits to improve health outcomes in older populations is a largely untapped (yet urgently needed) measure (27). This course will use a combination of basic research, epidemiology, clinical studies, centenarian studies (e.g., “Blue Zone” cultures), as well as complex system models to provide a strong basis for the principles that support a “longevity” diet, with the goal of dying young as old as possible. After completing this course, Social Workers will have a much deeper understanding of how diet can be used to optimize healthy, functional aging and longevity.
