Course Description:
By now you may be familiar with the more traditional LGBT acronyms and what they stand for: lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender. However, today, more and more of your clients are identifying and even creating labels that better represent their own gender and sexual orientations. More studies confirm that continuing to use outdated or stigmatizing language can be perceived as homophobic or transphobic for clients from this community, thus doing more harm than good. This presentation will explore the lesser-known gender concepts beyond the binary male/female, including gender non-conforming and non-binary, as well as lesser known sexual orientations, including pansexual and asexual. In addition, this presentation will help clinicians distinguish between pathologizing healthy forms of sexual behavior from other forms, such as hypoactive sexual desire disorder or serial monogamy. This presentation will also offer case studies and opportunities to discuss your own questions and experiences from your current caseloads.
