Course Description:
Nutrition plays a significant role for those with traumatic brain injuries and spinal cord injuries. This presentation will describe the role of the Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN). A wide variety of topics will be covered including components of a nutrition assessment, indicators of nutritional status, nutritional differences between the acute and chronic stages of brain and spinal cord injury, metabolism, energy and protein requirements and enteral feeding. Various challenges that can be improved through nutrition such as weight management, bowel issues, sodium variances and blood sugar issues will be discussed. Proper diets for clients will be explored. The presentation will end with recommendations for when to consult with an RDN.
