Course Description:
Practice Gap/Need and Course Description: Adequately analyzed psychoanalysts are not immune to the potential misuse or sometimes abuse of power differentials between themselves and their adult or child patients. Awareness of, and sensitivity to, such power differentials can significantly mitigate against such pernicious effects and contribute to a more helpful and ethical treatment. Some ingredients that constitute integrity which is mindful of the power differentials include respect for the individuality of each patient, curiosity, the desire to learn, and creating a space in which the patient can feel safe to play and find meaning in their experiences. The story of an adult who suffered from various abusive analytic treatments as a child and adolescent and returned to analysis as an adult will be presented as a case in point.
After attending this presentation, participants will be able to:
1. Discuss the long-term effects of child psychoanalysis in adult analysands.
2. Discuss the fact that child analysis can be evaluated by methods of outcome quality and its durability.
