Objectives:
By the conclusion of the lecture participants will:
1. Identify expectations that patients have when receiving treatment
2. Describe techniques for developing realistic expectations for patients
3. Discuss factors that can impact the treatment of pain
Applicable to Social Work Practice:
This presentation will provide clinicians a better understanding of pain expectations that patients have prior to treatment which are likely to influence the course of treatment and their satisfaction. Throughout this presentation basic information and techniques for helping patients to develop more realistic expectations will be discussed. Clinically important criteria that providers should consider when treating patients will also be presented regarding optimal care and patient outcomes.
