Developmental Disabilities and Dementia: Where Do They Meet?

Course Description:

People with developmental disabilities are living longer than ever, and with longer life comes an increased risk of dementia. In this workshop, you will learn about the risk of dementia for those with developmental disabilities, the unique signs and symptoms of dementia in this population, how to screen for suspected dementia and respond to the changes that occur. Some of the changes that will be discussed include those in communication, self-care, and behavior. You will learn about interventions that are based on/incorporate a person-centered approach to care and the philosophy of behavior as communication, which is central to best dementia-care practices.
