Course Description:
Members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community face many challenges not faced by the general population. These include, but are not limited to social problems, discrimination (covert as well as overt), disrespect, harassment, rejection, depression and anxiety. However, transgender individuals face some additional specific challenges not faced by the LGB portion of the community. These include legal identification that matches their gender identity; less understanding by the majority population of the T compared to the LG and B portion of the LGBT community; appearance and mannerisms that fit their gender identity; and greater mental and medical health issues. One area that is especially troublesome for older members of the LGBT community is the care received in assisted living facilities. An additional area that begs improvement for older, as well as younger transgender persons is where discrimination should have the least interference, and that is when they seek healthcare.
