The Intersection of Human Trafficking and the Drug Culture

Course Description:

The complex relationship between drug use and both labor and sex trafficking is a public health concern. The role of drugs in human trafficking is powerful and pervasive. Not only are those with drug abuse issues more vulnerable to being trafficked, but traffickers specifically target them. Traffickers can use drugs as a means of coercion. Many victims are forced to engage in criminality, such as illicit drug production and transportation. This presentation will explore the intersections of human trafficking and the drug culture, identify indicators of exploitation, discuss screening, and advanced clinical skills for the treatment of co-occurring mental health concerns.

In Our Own Backyard: Effective Ways to Approach Sexual Assault Response

Course Description:

Over the past few years and correlated to the overwhelming number of women who have participated in the #MeToo movement, there has been renewed attention to issues of sexual violence, which remains pervasive in our culture. This groundswell has created a refreshed platform for addressing gaps in service provider/clinician training for sexual assault response.

While statistics from the National Sexual Violence Resource Center show that 1 in 5 women and 1 in 7 men in the U.S. will face sexual assault at some point in their lifetime, very few counseling, social work and other social science educational programs have specific courses designed for training sexual assault response. Instead, service providers/clinicians learn this “on the job”; and strive to learn and grow to grow based on experiences.

During this interactive workshop, we discuss the basics of sexual assault and participants will learn to provide an adequate, timely and holistic response to sexual assault, while addressing barriers to disclosing and seeking services and learning about community resources available to those who have experienced sexual assault.

Pornography: Examing the Connection with Commercial Sexual Exploitation

Course Description:

Pornography undoubtedly perpetuates the commercial sexual exploitation of women and girls in America. However, the exact role it plays linking the two remains a hotly contested topic. Commonly known in the anti-trafficking field that 80 percent of survivors report that their customers showed them pornography to illustrate the kinds of sexual acts they want performed. We also know that traffickers will subject victims to porn to retain control, maximize profits and demean them. This workshop will examine pornography, its usage and how everyday usage impacts the arena of human trafficking

Working Together as Partners of Excellence for Better Identification and Prevention of Human Trafficking

Course Description:

The prevalence of human trafficking has reached alarming levels in the United States. To address this widespread crisis, individuals licensed or registered by the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA); e.g., social workers, nurses, and professional counselors all have a new continuing educational requirement which must be met when seeking initial or renewal of an individual’s licensure or registration. This presentation will address how each of us has a role in detecting and identifying suspected victims of human trafficking. The presentation will use a case-based approach to encourage appropriate language, a trauma sensitive approach, and working together as partners to prevent further victimization.
