Course Description:
Myths continue to exist regarding young dads of color and their relationship with their children. This workshop explores how practitioners can institute cross-system collaboration to engage, support, and empower young fathers involved in the child welfare and juvenile justice system. We will explore the myths that permeate our systems and create invisible obstacles, known as implicit bias, that can hinder both the father’s ability to connect with his child(ren) and with child welfare serving agencies. Participants will identify and support strategies that encourage the equitable engagement of fathers and provide opportunities to navigate barriers and challenges. Some of the questions the workshop will explore include: How do we see African American boys and men? How do we perceive their role as young fathers who are involved in cross-systems care? And most importantly, how do agencies and service providers support, engage, and empower young fathers to see themselves as ‘At Potential’ vs. ‘At Risk’.
