Course Description:
Herniation is one of the most common causes of back pain. The incidence of herniated disc is estimated at 5 to 20 cases per 1000 adults annually in the US and is a significant cause of morbidity and cost. Healthcare personnel are at particular risk and face a higher incidence of injury. The severity of pain from a herniated disc can have a major impact on an injured employee’s ability to work and perform tasks that involve lifting and carrying. Workers’ compensation helps with medical care and expenses, therapy and rehabilitation.
Despite the success of surgical discectomy in relieving pain and improving function, between 10% and 30% of discectomy patients experience unsatisfactory results, which include loss of disc height and recurrent disc herniation. Recurrent herniation is the most common cause of reoperations for lumbar disc surgeries with the average additional cost of lumbar reoperation to be approximately $11,161 per patient annually.
Annular closure devices have emerged as a new technology to address reherniation and reoperation. There is clinical data showing that patients with annular closure device placement have fewer re-herniations, compared to patients who did not receive the device, resulting in fewer additional surgeries. This enables patients to return to work and stay at work without the need for reoperation due to reherniation.
