Course Description:
Rehabilitation clinicians establish prognoses for recovery to develop treatment plans, establish discharge dates, and to communicate with patients and their families. Models with validation evidence for predictive accuracy can, in concert with clinical experience, facilitate tailoring of prognoses to individual patients. However, prognostic models for stroke recovery are relatively new and validation evidence is limited. This presentation will provide current best evidence for available prognostic models of upper and lower extremity motor functioning during stroke rehabilitation, which are limited to categorical stratification of expected outcome at fixed time points. Trajectory models retain individual differences in outcome and thus have potential to generate individual-level prognoses for new patients based on previous patients’ outcomes. However, such models must meet criteria for predictive accuracy before applying in routine clinical practice.
