Course Description:
intergenerational transmission of trauma, psychoanalysts may fail to conceptualize motherhood as a developmental process, subject to disruption by biological and psychological factors that may arise generations before a woman bears her first child. For women with a genetic mutation that substantially increases the risk of cancer in the female reproductive system, motherhood brings particular psychological challenges, not yet amply discussed in our literature.
After attending this presentation, participants will be able to:
1. Describe motherhood as a developmental process in adulthood, with attention to the shaping influence of a woman’s relationship with her own biological mother.
2. Assist patients in their development as mothers, by assessing each woman’s particular experience of
her female, reproductive body.
