Course Description:
Sepsis is a life-threatening, medical emergency affecting at least 1.7 million persons annually in the United States. The incidence of sepsis and septic shock has become a major factor in mortality from COVID-19. While it is the body’s systemic response to an infection, sepsis can progress to severe sepsis and, in some cases, to septic shock. Patients hospitalized with sepsis are eight times more likely to die during hospitalization. Older individuals are at an increased risk for developing sepsis. It is the most common admitting diagnosis for patients that are transferred to hospitals from many skilled nursing facilities. Since care does not end in the hospital all members of multidisciplinary healthcare team need to be aware of the physical and emotional responses to septic shock. Patients can experience cognitive, physical, and emotional symptoms after being discharged home or to a skilled nursing facility. The information in this course better equips social workers to assist their clients and be a vital member of the multidisciplinary healthcare team.
