Course Description:
Human trafficking is a horrendous human rights violation with profound negative physical and psychological consequences, including communicable diseases, substance use disorders, and mental illnesses. The health needs of this population are multiple, complex, and influenced by past and present experiences of abuse, neglect, and exploitation. We will look at the ethics of care model as a trauma-informed framework for providing health care to human trafficking victims and survivors. Trafficked persons can have difficulty establishing rapport and trust with authority figures like Social Workers, clinicians and other professionals. This can be anxiety provoking and this exploitation is frequently enmeshed with histories of abuse, neglect, rejection, and betrayal by family, friends, and intimate partners.
