Stages and Levels of Cross-Cultural Competence Development: From Theory to Application

  • WMU College of Health and Human Services 1240 Oakland Drive Kalamazoo, MI, 49008 United States (map)

Course Description:

The meaning of cross-cultural competence within the context of gender and race equality and equity, as well as systematic racism is constantly evolving. Thus, the health care and social services personnel would need to keep up to date with the increase in the evidence-based knowledge in the above listed areas. This training will help the participants recognize how to address biases and negative stereotypes, how to develop relevant professional skills, and how to adapt the service delivery to the current needs of the diverse populations that they serve. This training will follow Diaconu’s Cross-Cultural Competence Framework (2018) which will include the following levels of cross-cultural competence development: (1) cross-cultural self-awareness, (2) cross-cultural knowledge, (3) cross-cultural awareness, (4) cross-cultural sensitivity, (5) cross-cultural skills, and (6) cross-cultural humility.
