Understanding Microaggressions, Minority Stress and Inclusive Language when Treating LGBTQ+ Clients

  • Centrum Office Center 24901 Northwestern Highway Service Road Southfield, MI, 48075 United States (map)

Course Description:

Did you know that for your trans client, simply being themselves is now more dangerous than ever before? Did you know that for a gay/lesbian couple, holding hands in public can be cause for more fear from threat of violence than coming out to friends and family? Today LGBTQ+, oppressed, and other special population clients are suffering from higher rates of minority stress, including threat of violence, being refused service, and homophobic/transphobic language. This presentation will explore what microaggressions are, how minority stress has changed for LGBTQ+ clients, and why inclusive language is proven to be more effective when treating this population. This presentation will use case studies and allow ample time for questions and discussion.
