In recent years, the those working in healthcare are becoming more aware of human trafficking as a public health issue. As a result, legislation was passed in Michigan requiring healthcare professionals to seek out education about human trafficking prior to renewing their licenses. This presentation will provide the required education. The participants will learn what constitutes human trafficking, especially the difference between prostitution and sex trafficking. Records of survivors indicate that up to 88% sought healthcare while they were enslaved and the common reasons for seeking care will be presented. Once in the healthcare setting, most victims show “red flags” that may identify them. These indicators will also be presented. Once potential victims enter the healthcare system, it is essential that they are treated in a manner that will not retraumatize them. Therefore, it is important that healthcare providers understand the neurobiological changes that occur within the brain as a result of trauma and also know how to utilize Trauma Informed Care.
