Understanding Pain: Migraines, Headaches, Neck and Low Back Pain

  • Holiday Inn Gateway Centre 5353 Gateway Centre Drive Flint, MI 48507 United States (map)

Course Description:

The course is directly relevant to social work professionals, as the most current (2018) evidence shows the confluence of high burdens: chronic pain-related

disability (such as with spinal pain) or reduced socioeconomic standing and perspectives (such as with chronic headaches) and pharmaceutical agents dependence and overuse/abuse, contributing to higher-than-expected vulnerability and potential failure of selective and indicated interventions. The course will address the socioethical issue of appropriateness of disclosure of protected information, especially in the setting of chronic pain and elevated risk of drug dependence and substance use. The course will also provide the social worker with a crucial update on the physiology of pain based on most recent neuroscientific research, most importantly, neurotransmitter imbalances observed in chronic pain, update on medications used on-label and off-label for management of pain, as well as specific recommendations on establishment of realistic pain control and activity level goals, reduction of chronicity, and non-medication approaches available to sufferers of acute and chronic pain.
