Trauma Awareness: Empowering Self-Healing Communities

  • Bernhard Center Western Michigan University 1903 W. Michigan Avenue Kalamazoo, MI 49008 United States (map)

Course Description:

The goal with our program for this event is to ensure that there is time for attendees to not only discuss the work around trauma that is being done in their sectors, but also to have time to create action plans with people who may have common problems and solutions. Together we created a program that would allow for attendees to do some learning with Dr. Laura Porter, and hear about her expertise and knowledge around the subject before they break out into their chosen sector: Education, Health, Government, Community Work, or Human Resources. Each breakout session is scheduled to be facilitated by a leader in that sector. The first session will focus on laying the groundwork and sharing out information to create a framework for the next session. After lunch, attendees will head to the second breakout session where the facilitators will help them to create action plans around how they want to see their sectors become more trauma-informed. After this, everyone will head back to the main room for a general assembly and a closing session, a Call to Action, led by Dr. Porter.
