Ethical Decision Making for Social Workers: Justified and Unjustified Paternalism

Course Description:

This workshop introduces participants to an ethical decision-making framework based on common morality as conceptualized by philosopher Bernard Gert. Participants will discuss the role of the Code of Ethics and other philosophical frameworks as it relates to ethical decision-making. The bulk of this workshop, however, will be to educate participants on the common moral framework and its application to ethical decision-making. Additional emphasis will be given to defining the concept of paternalism and discussing how the framework can be useful in distinguishing between [justified and unjustified paternalism.
