Attendees will be introduced to the state of the current opioid epidemic, historical data on excess opioid prescribing, the importance of preventing opioid use before it starts, and prescribing guidelines. This lecture will further describe the role of acute care prescribing (surgery, dentistry and emergency medicine) in the opioid epidemic, specifically as it relates to pain, including the development of new chronic opioid dependence or abuse. Dr. Brummett will discuss leveraging the surgical care to study mechanisms of poioid dependence, abuse efficacy and side effects.
