Course Description:
In today’s more politically divided climate, using appropriate words in session with your LGBTQ+ client is about being inclusive. To be inclusive is to be accepting and affirming of everything about someone as a person. This presentation will talk to the importance of using appropriate words, especially at the intersection of substance abuse, gender, sexuality and microaggressions. Most of your LGBTQ+ clients have experienced some form of trauma in their past, and by not honoring or supporting them for who they are, you may inadvertently retraumatize them in session. Using harmful or offensive language not only retraumatizes your LGBTQ+ clients, it may endanger them to participate in self-harm due to not receiving the appropriate and much needed help they deserve.
