The Small t in LGBT: Finding Transgender and Gender Expansive Children in Translation

Course Description:

After attending this presentation, participants will be able to: 1) Apply an understanding of the interface of nature, nurture, and culture in the evolution of a child’s gender self to clinical treatment;  2)  Integrate Irene Fast’s theory of gender inclusivity into a developmental understanding of the transgender/gender expansive child;  3)  Differentiate gender expansiveness or transgender identity as a core issue of self from gender dysphoria as a symptom of some other underlying psychological issues;    4)  Develop clinical tools for translation of communications from children about their gender selves, including a developmental template that sorts gender expressions from gender identity from sexual orientation.
