Critical Incident Stress Management: Assisting Individuals in Crisis

  • Wayne County Community College-Downriver Campus 21000 Northline Road Taylor, MI, 48180 United States (map)

Course Description:

Crisis Intervention is NOT psychotherapy; rather, it is a specialized acute emergency mental health
intervention which requires specialized training. As physical first aid is to surgery, crisis intervention is to psychotherapy. Thus, crisis intervention is sometimes called "emotional first aid". This program is designed to teach participants the fundamentals of, and a specific protocol for, individual crisis
intervention. Counselors, social workers, and marriage and family therapists should be familiar with the responses to stress, especially critical incident stress , and be prepared to intervene appropriately in order to help return the affected person(s) to normal functioning within their social environment.
