Working with the Deaf: Do You Know What It Takes?

  • 1270 Doris Road Auburn Hills, MI, 48326 United States (map)

Course Description:

This minority community experiences gaps in mental health care in Michigan. Per capita, Deaf people have more mental health needs than the general population, yet most mental health practitioners have little familiarity with the needs of Deaf people. Working with a Deaf person requires knowledge of Deaf culture, an understanding of how Deaf people view Deafness and ASL, how typical interventions need to be modified to work for a person whose first language is ASL, as well as the laws that govern the use of interpreters. The audience will be exposed to various factors that have an influence on a patient's experience in behavioral health settings, such as etiology, dysfluent language, and language deprivation.
