Exploring the Link Between Animal Cruelty and Family Violence

  • NASW-Michigan (Manpower Building) 741 North Cedar Street Lansing, MI, 48906 United States (map)

Course Description:

Ingham County Animal Control Director, John Dinon, will discuss the link between animal cruelty and family violence.  Animal Control departments are charged with enforcing animal cruelty laws, and while carrying out this duty often encounter signs of spouse and child abuse.  In many states, animal control officers are mandatory reporters.  In Michigan this is not the case, but many animal control agencies - including Ingham County - do report all suspected family violence.  Director Dinon will provide an overview of animal control responsibilities, emphasizing animal cruelty enforcement and lead a discussion of animal cruelty's relationship with family violence.
