By the conclusion of the lecture participants will:
1. Recognize signs of Human Labor Trafficking and Sex Trafficking
2. Describe red flags of potential victims of human trafficking in the healthcare setting
3. Identify common health issues of human trafficking victims
4. Understand how human trafficking affects victims’ neurodevelopment and behaviors
Applicable to Social Work Practice:
As information about human trafficking (HT) is becoming more available, more cases are being reported and more victims are coming forward. As reported by the Michigan Attorney General’s office, 330 cases were worked by the FBI in Michigan in 2015. Sixty-two cases were reported to the National Human Trafficking Resource Center January through March of 2016 with an overall 39% increase in reported cases in Michigan in 2016. Studies involving HT survivors indicate that up to 88% of human trafficking victims seek medical care while in captivity. For this reason, Michigan now requires healthcare workers to obtain education on human trafficking for licensure renewal.
