Course Description:
At times it can be difficult to communicate well with birth families in the child welfare system. Their own personal traumas and misunderstandings of the system make it hard to connect with them and, therefore, their collaboration and involvement with the system is sometimes limited. This training will build an understanding of the birth family’s perspective, look at strategies to engage them in services, and create an understanding of their child’s trauma behaviors to educate and support them. This training will focus on the important role that birth families can have in minimizing trauma for their children during the removal and placement process and during their duration in care. This training will utilize exercises, small and large group discussions, and visual displays.
