Ethics and the Impaired Professional: What’s a Social Worker to Do?

  • Grand Valley State University Bicycle Factory 201 Front Avenue Southwest Grand Rapids, MI, 49504 United States (map)

Course Description:

This training explores the topic of helping professionals who are dealing with their own substance abuse, mental health, and relationship issues that could lead to impaired practice. Studies show that social workers report higher incidents of depression and substance abuse than the general public, but are less likely to seek help for fear of negative consequences. Additionally, colleagues are often reluctant to “interfere” or point out impairment. What guidance can the NASW Code of Ethics and research provide? Dialogue and exercises will cover identification, interventions, and recommendations for action.
