Course Description:

outh Mental Health First Aid teaches members of the public how to respond in a mental health emergency with youth and young adults and how to offer support to a young person who appears to be in emotional distress. The Youth Mental Health First Aid course increases participants’ knowledge of mental health challenges in youth and will also give them the tools to help when young people in their schools, homes, and communities require first aid for a broad array of mental health challenges, including suicidal thoughts and behaviors, self-injury, panic attacks, reactions to trauma, acute psychosis, substance abuse, and aggressive behavior.
 
Youth Mental Health First Aid is offered in the form of an interactive 8-hour course that is designed to help the first aider assist a young person showing symptoms of a mental illness or experiencing a mental health crisis until appropriate professional or other help can be engaged. Those who take the 8-hour course to certify as Youth Mental Health First Aiders learn a 5-step action plan encompassing the skills, resources, and knowledge to help a young person in crisis connect with appropriate professional, peer, social, and self-help care.
