Course Description:

Chronic pain affects more than 100 million individuals within the U.S. Pain affects more Americans than diabetes, heart disease and cancer combined. Pain is a symptom of most disease processes therefore understanding pain and its effect on the patient is imperative for all members of the medical team involved in that patient’s care. Of the major chronic pain disorders identified by a National Institute of Health Statistics survey, low back pain was the most common (27%), followed by severe headache or migraine pain (15%), neck pain (15%) and facial ache or pain (4%). Back pain is the leading cause of disability in Americans under 45 years old. More than 26 million Americans between the ages of 20-64 experience frequent back pain and adults with low back pain are often in worse physical and mental health than people who do not have low back pain. For over two decades the Institute for Natural Resources has provided continuing medical education to help social workers and other medical professionals achieve their professional objectives. The Chronic Pain Disorders and Treatments home study course continues in that vein to provide the social worker with current relevant information and research that addresses many of the pain disorders commonly seen in clinical practice today.
