Course Description:

This is a one-day training for substance abuse professionals, peer support specialists, social workers, outreach workers and other human service providers interested in enhancing their knowledge in assessing the stages of change specific to adult and adolescent clients with substance use disorders. Participants will be familiarized with strategies for counseling them at their stage of change and motivating them to transition to the next stage thus moving them into recovery maintenance. Participants will be familiarized with the various stages of change in addiction counseling.  Strategies, approaches and motivational techniques specific to child and adolescent SUDs clients will be provided as well as those specific to adults. Participants will receive insight regarding the importance of the client’s ability to identify their Strengths, Needs, Abilities and Preferences (S.N.A.P) to increase their chances of ongoing recovery. Barriers to remaining in the recovery maintenance stage, self-motivating tools to assist clients in overcoming motivational challenges, will be discussed.
