Collaborative Divorce Practice: A Team Approach

  • Hilton Garden Inn-Detroit/Novi 27355 Cabaret Drive Novi, MI, 48377 United States (map)

Course Description:

Collaborative divorce is an alternative dispute resolution process which utilizes an interdisciplinary team.  The goal is to achieve an equitable divorce which is more cooperative and less harmful than “traditional” divorce. This two-day introductory training will provide an overview of the difference between litigation and the collaborative approach. It will define the role of the attorneys, the financial professional and the mental health professional(s).

Mental health professionals will learn their role as team members, and be given clarity on the definition of the role, its boundaries, as well tasks, activities and functions performed. Time will also be spent on interacting with the two other disciplines as team members.  The steps to assess a case, and work as a team member with both the couple and the other professionals, will be discussed.

Participants will have time to examine challenges in this complex work and learn strategies for dealing with them. Some time will also be devoted to ethical considerations of the mental health professional in this role.
