Sexual Secrets: Our Mystery Composer's Crushing Torment

  • The Michigan League Henderson Room 911 North University Avenue Ann Arbor, MI, 48104 United States (map)

Course Description:

Aware of his sexual secrets since an early age, our mystery composer had to endure the additional sorrows of the loss of his nanny and later the loss of his mother. Torment and guilt over the death of his first beloved by suicide haunted him for decades.  Intra-psychic and interpersonal struggles over his sexual secrets led to a disastrous attempt at a solution. His creative work became important disguised expressions of his private sorrows, yearnings and hopes. Through his creativity he was able to not only attain some personal mastery and growth, but also achieve innovations that influenced subsequent generations of composers. The impact of significant sexual secrets and trauma on one's life and work will be explored. The indescribable pain and suffering inflicted by the oppressive and discriminatory socio-cultural environment, which still continues today, will be addressed. The important role of psychoanalytic treatment will be discussed. Audiovisual selections of our mystery composer will be included for our audience's enjoyment.
