Financial Social Work: Responding to the Grand Challenges

  • University of Detroit Mercy 4001 West McNichols Road Detroit, MI, 48221 United States (map)

Course Description:

This one day conference will focus on financial social work and its application in the community and clinical practice practitioners as we seek to address on the financial capability and assets building components of the Grand Challenges for Social Work.

The Grand Challenges for Social Work represent a dynamic social agenda, focused on improving individual and family well-being, strengthening the social fabric, and helping create a more just society. One Challenges focuses on building financial capability for all, because "nearly half of all American households are financially insecure, without adequate savings to meet basic living expenses for three months. We can significantly reduce economic hardship and the debilitating effects of poverty by adopting social policies that bolster lifelong income generation and safe retirement accounts; expand workforce training and re-training; and provide financial literacy and access to quality affordable financial services" (SSWR).
