Affective Engagement and the Psychoanalytic Process

  • Michigan Psychoanalytic Society 32841 Middlebelt Road Farmington Hills, MI, 48334 United States (map)

Course Description:

It is not widely understood that it is important to understand psychotherapy and psychoanalysis from the perspective of the feelings of the suffering patient.  It is important that thetherapist or analystbe able to recognizeand help the patient to recognizehis or her affective state, rather than makingcognitively based interventions. Dr. Shill noticesthat sometimes he is more aware than is the patient of the patient’s deep suffering. Dr. Shill provides a rich clinical description of how he focuses on the patient’s affect in order to help the patient gain greater awareness, which leads to deeper and more meaningful interpretations.
