The Silent Epidemic-Conference on Suicide

Course Description:

3 day conference:  to provide a local forum to share information about suicide, the latest research on the causes and means of prevention of suicide and an opportunity to discuss the repercussions of suicide. Two communities of people will also be spotlighted. Suicide in the workplace and suicide among veterans and active military personnel. The final day will concentrate on survivors of suicide with opportunities to understand loss and grief following suicide. Available resources will be provided to assist survivors,  mental health professionals and other caregivers in the understanding the needs of loss survivors. Many presenters in the field of suicide research and clinical practice including: Dr.Thomas Joiner, a noted suicide specialist; the U of M Bi-Polar panel, concurrent breakouts on many topics including suicide risk among medical students, DBT, post partum depression and the risk of suicide, the hidden risks of LGBT youth, anti-bullying, effect of trauma on youth, plus many others. Also offered is the screening of a documentary film, The S-Word, followed by a panel discussion. Not included for CE’s is a benefit concert by Judy Collings on Friday night. She will be one of the speakers on 11/11 speaking on surviving suicide.
