Course Description:
Suicide rates have been increasing worldwide over the last 60 years. Persons with brain injury demonstrate suicide behavior at higher rates than the general population. Screening and individualized assessment identifying risk factors and related features of suicide behavior are an important part of identifying persons at risk. This presentation will provide information on the increased risk of suicide behavior in persons with brain injury, demographic and situational factors that indicate
increased risk for suicide ideation and suicide attempts, and language conventions in the discussion of suicide and selfdirected violence phenomena. Suicide screening tools, prevention initiatives and treatment interventions for suicide behavior will also be discussed.
