Course Description:

Human trafficking involves the use of force, fraud, or coercion to obtain some type of labor or commercial sex act. Victims can be any age, race, gender, or nationality and it can happen in any community. Traffickers might use violence, manipulation, or false promises of good-paying jobs or romantic relationships to entice victims into trafficking situations. Human trafficking is often a hidden crime due to language barriers, fear of their traffickers, and/or fear of law enforcement which frequently keep victims from seeking help. Health care providers are often the only professionals to interact with trafficking victims who are still in captivity. Participants of this activity will gain knowledge in identifying risk factors, potential red flags, and common mental health issues of trafficked persons. Additionally, neurobiology changes with human trafficking and Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) will be discussed.
