Course Description:

This course is to introduce behavioral health practitioners to effective assessment, treatment planning, and treatment for individuals with cannabis and/or opioid use disorders. Given that these drugs are legal in many states and have medical uses, they can easily be abused. Understanding the use and misuse of cannabis and opioids as our new legal drugs is critical given the complexity of substance use disorders which often co-occur with mental health and physical disorders.

By the end of this training, you should be able to:

Describe history of public mental health and substance use disorder care in the US over the last few decades and how that affects treatment systems today.

Assess risk for opioid and cannabis use disorders with clients.

Develop 2 examples of goals, objectives, interventions, and discharge criteria for individuals with co-occurring disorders.

Be aware of the trends related to prescription and illegal opioid use and the risks of overdose death.

Rehearse ways to reduce harm for individuals at early-stage readiness for mental health or substance use needs.

Understand staging and stages of change, as well as how to use staging tools with clients and treatment teams to decide on appropriate interventions.

Understand the process for finding the best evidence for a particular clinical situation.
