Course Description:

This session is designed to examine primary prevention of opioid overdose and response to overdose once it occurs. It begins with a brief review opioid types, opioid use, opioid use disorder, opioid overdose and patterns of use and overdose in the U.S., with particular focus on Michigan. The discussion then shifts to factors which increase the risk for overdose and means to reduce the impact of these factors. Finally, we will review the signs of an opioid overdose, means to address overdose in community and medical settings, and explore actions which may reduce the incidence of repeat overdoses.
